Another visualisation created to highlight the issue of illegal parking is the
relationship between illegally parked cars and the presence of trees along each street.
What immediately emerges from this analysis is a higher number of street trees compared to
illegally parked cars in streets with tree-lined parterres, except for specific points such as
Viale Umbria, Viale Campania and Viale Lucania, where despite the presence of tree-lined parterres,
the number of illegally parked cars exceeds the number of trees.
On the other hand, streets with a high number of parked cars tend to be those in the dense network
of secondary streets, where given the size of the sidewalks and roadway spaces, do not have trees nearby.
If we were to convert the space inappropriately occupied by cars into trees or permeable surfaces for every
occupied square metre, we could offset a significant proportion of the emissions generated by urban traffic
and generally improve the quality of the urban environment, slowing global warming, reducing energy
consumption and cleaning the air we breathe of fine particulates.
The results of this analysis show that for almost 50% of the total length of the roads mapped,
illegally parked cars outnumber trees.
